Creating Your Own Online Assessment with the IPIP

For Programmers

For Novices

The best guide we have seen for people with little or no programming knowledge who want to create an online personality assessment is R. Chris Fraley's book How to Conduct Behavioral Research over the Internet: A Beginner's Guide to HTML and CGI/Perl. Chris is a psychologist, not trained in coding, who taught himself enough about programming to do psychological research on the Web. As a novice himself, he understands what it is like to be a newcomer to computer programming and consequently does a superb job in explaining programming concepts in his book. Perl is not the favorite programming language for most programmers, but it is not difficult to learn, and once you learn any programming language, this makes it easier to learn additional programming languages. This 2004 book is a bit dated now, but that also means that it is very inexpensive. Chris also maintains a Web page to support the book. This page contains extensive information and free resources for conducting online research.
